Even as the Students for Free Tibet, in coordination with the Tibetan Youth Congress, held rallies in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore, it was only in Kolkata that the Tibetans were not allowed to do so.
“On February 17, we approached DC (Headquarters) for permission to hold the rally, but we were not allowed to meet the officer. His assistant told us that if we wanted to hold the event then we could not use loudspeakers. We agreed to that,” said a student.
He, however, added that later they were told that permission could not be granted as the Tibet uprising day was clashing with Milad Un Nabi (the birthday of Prophet Mohammed).
“They said that they did not want any violence. But we were only holding a peaceful vigil to mark the occasion,” the student said. When contacted, DC DD Jawed Shamim said: “No body had approached me for the permission to hold the rally. About 10 days ago, a group of Tibetan students wanted to hold a candle light vigil at Metro Channel and we gave them our permission. There is no reason as to why we wouldn’t have given them the permission this time.”
