The police said he was also carrying audio cassettes of speeches of senior Maoist leaders and a Sony tape recorder. “Dipak must be using these recorded statements to indoctrinate fresh recruits,” said a senior CID officer investigating the case.
Other items Dipak was carrying as per the seizure list included leaflets and magazines of a few social organisations, state government employees unions, CPI (Maoist), a Bengali language book of Class VII to VIII, one small comb, a 20 gm Colgate toothpaste. This is apart from Rs 53,000 he was carrying in cash.
A CID officer said “we are probing whether he has links with these organisations”.
According to the seizure list, a brown envelope containing four old railway tickets were found. The tickets were for Howrah to Mecheda in East Midnapore dated February 21, Bally in Howrah district to Konnagar on November 18, 2009, Mecheda in East Midnapore to Bauria in Howrah on December 25, 2009, Howrah to Mecheda in January 31 and one bus ticket from Digha to Mangrul.
“This shows he moved at ease using local trains and public buses. We have identified some of his contacts in the areas he recently visited,” the officer said.
The list also contains a booklet of West Bengal State Employees Union (New Chapter), a leaflet of Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee in Nandigram and a bulletin from West Bengal government’s struggling Employees Unity Forum. A leaflet against Special Economic Zones was also found.
A Bengali magazine Matangini, published by one Debolina Chakraborty, was also found in his possession.
Another leaflet making a reference to Trinamool Congress Siksha (Education) Cell’s Abasthan Bikhov programme (sit-in) at Esplanade in November 27 was also found. A Bengali version of a magazine called Anik was also found with him, which contained articles on “Berli Prachir”, “Jyoti Basu”, “Kopenhegen Sammelan”, besides a few poems.
CPI (Maoists) literature mentioning about an open letter to Mamata Banerjee was also found.
According to CID sources, Dipak has confessed to his role in major attacks since 1999, including in the in the mine blast on the route of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s convoy in November 2008.
Meanwhile, with the arrest of Telugu Dipak (Venkateshwara Rao), the police claimed they have penetrated the human intelligence network of CPI (Maoists) for the first time saying it was a Maoist insider who tipped them off about the presence of their “prized catch” at Sarsuna Bus stand. They said process for cracking the Maoist intelligence was initiated around six months ago.
“Dipak is a prized catch. I do not want to comment as to how we cracked their intelligence. One must remember he did not even use a cellphone and covered his tracks beautifully,” said Raj Kanojia, ADG (CID).
“We aim to gather good information regarding the guerrilla tactics used by the Maoists and their preparations in the state,” said a CID officer.
