New Delhi With security being of utmost priority in the Capital during the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the New Delhi Municipal Council has decided to tie up with the Delhi Police to ensure safety in the areas under its jurisdiction. While it plans to set up disaster management teams and provide commando training to members, smart cards will be issued to street vendors and tehbazaris to keep an eye on their movement.

“Security is a major concern and we will be tying up with the Delhi Police to implement various schemes,” Parimal Rai, chairperson of the NDMC, said after the meeting.

A disaster management system will be set up in the New Delhi area to handle any untoward situation within minutes. The disaster management team will be given training in all aspects, including basic commando training, to handle a possible terrorist attack before security agencies take over, Rai said.

The NDMC also plans to procure a Disaster Response Vehicle equipped with latest fire-fighting apparatus.

Smart cards would be issued to vendors and tehbazaris to make sure all are identified and their details available with the NDMC. Also, vendors will be able to make t1heir payments to the Council with over the Internet.

“Vendors who do not have smart cards can then be picked up by the police and questioned; also, the police can also access the details of all of them on our database,” an official told Newsline.

The NDMC has recently awarded contracts for the installation of CCTV cameras at Palika Bazar, Palika parking, Central Park, and Palika Kendra, while plans have been approved for installing CCTVs at all stadiums that will host events during the 2010 Games. This includes Talkatora Stadium and Shivaji Stadium, both of which are presently under renovation.
