Kolkata Chalking out the development plan for the institute for the next five years, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM)-Calcutta is keen to induct around 500 students for the PGDM programme and make it the upper limit for candidate intake.

To compete with the best in the business —Harvard and MIT — the institute is also vigorously pursuing for the international accreditation by the Association of Advanced Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

This year, the institute had taken in 407 students, more than any other IIM in the country. According to the authorities, in the coming year, the student intake will be around 474. The institute has to increase the number of seats to accommodate the 27 per cent OBC quota.

“The maximum number of students in the institute will be around 12,000 — comprising students from the PGDM, PGPEX (Executive) and the VLMP programme for manufacturing,” said Dinesh Verma, Chief Administrative Officer of the institute, adding that this was decided in the IIM-C Board of Governors meeting, which was held this week.

According to Verma, the student intake for the PGPEX and VLMP programme will also be increased.

In order to cope with the increased student intake, the institute has decided to upgrade the infrastructure, adding around four lakh square feet area. This would comprise two hostel complexes with each housing 168 students, additional dining complex, 14 classroom and faculty residences.

The entire infrastructure development is set to be completed by the end of next year.

The institute is also planning to rope in professional managers for various administrative works. “We are working towards relieving the faculty members from various administrative works,” said Verma.
