Kolkata, October 20 To curb the growing menace of cyber crimes in the country, Union Ministry of Communications and Information Technology will set up the first ever Indian accreditation facility for software in Kolkata. B J Srinath, senior director of Indian Computer Emergency Response Team under the IT ministry, said: “The accreditation facility will be the first-of-its-kind in India and will accredit the security aspects of software developed by companies.”

Cyber security issues have underlined the need for credible and secure software that cannot be misued. The proposed facility will accredit an IT product on its security related aspects. The pilot project facility will be set up within the premises of the Electronic Regional Test Laboratory (East) under the Central IT department, located in Kolkata. The Rs 8 crore project will help in certifying IT products and enhance their credibility in a world threatened by cyber crimes.

At present, India does not have any certification infrastructure for IT products because there are very few Indian software available in the market. The non-availability of certification facilities has forced Indian software companies to get certification from abroad.

The government accreditation centre will enable India to join countries like Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Australia which already have government accreditation facilities for software security. “The facility will help Indian software developers working on software security products to save the time and cost of getting certification from foreign countries,” said Srinath.

The testing of IT products for security accreditation at the proposed centre will be open to all companies, which can get their products certified by the government. “Till now India received certified products from abroad. With the accreditation facility, we will also be able to certify IT products,” said Srinath. The Indian certification will be admissible in all the 28 countries which have Common Criteria Recognition Arrangement (CCRA). The IT ministry is also considering to set up a full-fledged IT security product-testing and certification facility in the country.
