Lucknow After receiving accolades at the Oscars, nine-year-old Pinki - the central character of Smile Pinki documentary - has been roped in by the National Dalit Front (NDF) to campaign for the party in the Lok Sabha elections.

The recently floated NDF comprises Indian Justice Party (IJP), Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), Godwana Party and Republican Party.

Announcing this here on Friday, Udit Raj, president of IJP, said that LJP chief and the Front’s chairman Ram Vilas Paswan will felicitate Pinki at a function in New Delhi on March 15.

Raj also visited Pinki’s village in Mirzapur and gave her a cash reward of Rs 5,000.

Defending the Front’s decision to rope in a child to further their political ambitions, Raj said: “What’s wrong in it. I do what I believe and never lie to the people. We will honour Pinki in all our election meetings.”

“What has Mayawati, who claims to be ‘dalit ki beti’, done for Pinki? The Maharashtra government has given a flat to all child artists of Slumdog Millionaire,” he said.

Pinki, a resident of Rampur Dabahi, an obscure village in Naxal-hit Mirzapur district, is the main charater in a documentary on the life of children born with cleft lips and palate and an international campaign to repair the deformity. She was born with cleft lips, underwent corrective surgery and is now living a normal life.

The film made by Megan Mylan won an Oscar and Pinki, along with her father and the surgeon who carried out the surgery on her, were special guests at the Oscar ceremony in Los Angeles.
