Ludhiana In A bid to streamline the working in all the municipal corporation’s zonal offices, Mayor Hakam Singh Giaspura is busy checking the attendance of staff.

The drive which has been on for the last three weeks has sent shivers down the spine of employees. “Disciplinary action will be taken against absentees in the coming week,” warned the Mayor.

He visits Zone C office every Wednesday. In the first week, 18 employees were found absent without intimation, the next week the number reduced to 11 and today only two employees were late. “Absenteeism has reduced a lot, and this is our only motive,” said the Mayor.

Although the Mayor is yet to swoop on other zones in the city, he did not want to disclose any particular day. Few months ago also, he had checked the attendance registrars of zonal offices and had found 11 employees from zone B, 20 each from zone A and zone D on French leave. He has then directed all the zonal commissioners to check the attendance register so that employees remain vigilant and report to work in time.

Reaching late in office is a common problem, he said. He indicated strict disciplinary action against latecomers and absentees who disappear from office without getting their leave sanctioned.

Feroze Gandhi market parking lot auctioned Finally, the Municipal Corporation authorities auctioned the Feroze Gandhi market parking lot. Against the reserve price of Rs 60 lakh, the MC got only Rs 62.50 lakh. The contract has been allotted to the previous contractor Tirlochan Singh.

Last year, the same contractor had picked this parking lot at Rs 75 lakh. The contractor alleged that as he suffered losses more than 15 lakh, he did not bid higher this time. This was the third attempt by the MC to organise the auction of the parking lot in the last one month.
