Top seeds take a tumble

Kolkata, February 7 The top two seeds in the men’s singles were ousted today at the SPS Elegant Central Excise AITA Open Grass Court Tennis Championship 2008. Top seed VM Ranjeet of Chennai was upstaged by statemate Kamala Kannan in a marathon 149-minute encounter 7-5, 6-4.

The first set, which lasted 57 minutes, had three breaks. Kannan broke Ranjeet in the third and eleventh games and failed to keep his serve in the tenth. Ranjeet served five aces, two double faults and served 70 percent of the first serves correctly.

Kannan had three aces, three double faults and served 65 percent of the first serves in. In the second set, Ranjeet got broken in the first and seventh games games and Kannan again lost one game, the second one. Kannan took the set at 6-4 and booked his berth in the semis. Kannan served three aces and three double faults and put 76.5 percent of the first serves in. Ranjeet put 76 percent of the first serves in.

Delhi’s Yannick Nelord, the seventh seed reached the semis by defeating second seed Chennai player, Vinod Sridhar. In the first set, Nelord broke Vinod in the fifth and ninth games and failed to retain his serve in the fourth. Yannick also served five aces. The second set was played on serves with no breaks. In the tie-break, however, Yannick broke Vinod in first, fourth and eighth points to take the tie breaker at 7-1. The match lasted 140 minutes. Yannick’s positive points were his serves. He also approached the net more often and attacked Vinod on the backhand. Backhand is Vinod’s weaker shots.

The other semi-finalists are Arjun Goutham from Karnataka and N Vijay Sundar Prashanth of Tamil Nadu.

Third seeds, Saurav Sukul of Kolkata, partnering Yannick Nelord of Delhi, sealed his place in the semi-finals of men’s doubles by beating Rahil Makharia and Alan Moses of Maharashtra 6-2, 6-1.

Top-seeded ladies doubles pair of Ragini Vimal and Shivika Burman lost their semi-finals to Grace Hannah of Tamil Nadu and Anushree Thammanna of Karnataka 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), (4-10).
