Mumbai An indoor court likely next year, hint organisers

The 25th is when the celebrations will have all the frills. But its the coming editions of the All India Ramu Memorial basketball tournament that will be looked forward to as the Indian Gymkhana gets thinking on the indoor-courts very seriously. Jayant Lapsia, chairman of the Ramu Memorial event stated that an indoor court could be up as soon as next year - giving the city a facility that is conspicuous by its absence. "We're awaiting a few permissions. But the next year could well be at an indoor stadium," Lapsia said.

At this year's edition, seven men's and four women's teams would take part in the Silver Jubilee Ramu Memorial All India Basketball Tournament here from February 28 to March 8. National champions Railways, also the holders, former winners Indian Overseas Bank (Tamil Nadu), ONGC (Uttaranchal), last years runners-up Services, Chennai Customs, Maharashtra and the Rest of India outfit would take part in the mens section, it was announced by organisers here. Chairman Jayant Lapsia said at a press conference that the total budgeted expenditure for the tournament is between Rs 35 to 40 lakhs, out of which the men's and women's winners would take home Rs one lakh and Rs 50,000 respectively.

"This is one of the coveted events in the calendar of the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) since the mid 1960s and we had revived it in 2006 after a long break (from 1990 to 2005)," he said. In the Silver Jubilee year of the event the Gymkhana will felicitate top former stalwarts Abbas Moontasir, Kushi Ram, Hanuman Singh, Ajmer Singh, Sajjan Singh, Nandini Gulwadi, among others, he said.
