Kolkata Chameli Das was in Kolkata to meet her husband, say police

A prominent woman Maoist leader from Bihar was arrested from a slum in Keshab Chandra Sen Street by the Bihar Police and Kolkata Special Task Force (STF) personnel early on Sunday.

Chameli Das (40) was wanted in at least six cases, including the blowing up of Abeli SDO office in Munger district of Bihar in 2008 and killing of a policeman in the same year, STF sources said on Sunday.

“A resident of Vikhadi under the Sangrampur police station in Bihar, Chameli has a long history of association with the Maoists. Chameli had come to Kolkata to undergo a treatment for her eyes and to meet her husband Badri Das, a cobbler who stays at 123, Keshab Chandra Sen Street,” a police officer said.

On a specific tip-off, a Bihar Police team came to Kolkata and with the help of Kolkata STF picked her up from her husband’s house.

Later in the day, she was produced in the Bankshall Court. The court gave three-day transit remand to Bihar police, so that she could be taken to Bihar for further interrogation.
