Kolkata Unknown miscreants today shot dead Sunil Pal, a trade union leader from CPI (ML) Liberation, at Haripur in Burdwan district as he was entering the party office. Burdwan SP R Rajsekhran said the probe is on but no arrests have been made.

After the killing, various Naxal outfits called a bandh at Asansol and Durgapur.

Kartik Pal, state secretary of CPI (ML) Liberation, said Sunil had started a trade union at the mines in Asansol and Durgapur after which rivalry between him and the local CPM cropped up.

Kartik alleged his colleague was killed by miscreants hired by the CPM.

Amal Haldar, CPM district secretary of Burdwan, however, said there was no rivalry between his party and Pal and that the CPM was not involved in the killing.
