The trade unions inluding CITU, AITUC, Congress-backed INTUC, UTUC, PUCC and HMS and also other groups have also called for organising protests on November 8. “In case our demands are met not then we will consider the option of going for a nationwide strike,” Shyamal Chakraborty CITU state president said at a press conference in Kolkata on Friday. INTUC leader Ramen Pandey and representatives of other trade unions were also present at the press conference.
CITU leader Kali Ghosh, who was also present at the meet, said the proposal of going on strike was discussed at the national convention of the trade unions on September 7 early this year.
“Our main demand is against price rise and corruption. Then we are opposing privatising and pension policy of this government,” Ghosh said. Among the other demands raised by the trade unions include minimum wages of Rs 10,000 and opposition to contractualisation of workers.
Ghosh said the governments should also ensure that there is registration of trade unions in 45 days. Referring to the state Labour Minister Purnendu Bose’s comments that that there should be one trade union in every organisation, the representatives said it violated the rights of the workers.
