Chandigarh A traffic constable was suspended on Monday after Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Hardeep Singh Doon caught him red-handed demanding a bribe from a vehicle owner.

The constable had reportedly stopped the car driver for jumping a traffic light near Fun Republic around 11.30 am on Sunday morning. The cop has been identified as Bajinder Singh (belt number 2863).

According to sources, an unidentified caller informed the SP (Traffic) about the cop’s conduct and the senior officer immediately rushed to the scene. “The driver had crossed the light while it was turning from green to red. The driver justified his action saying that he was driving at a speed of 60 kmph and he could not apply brakes in the middle of the crossing.

After verifying all the documents, including the driving licence, registration certificate, insurance certificate, the cop finally asked the driver to grease his palm or he would issue a challan,” said an eyewitness.

The erring constable was asked to report at the office immediately. SP Doon let the driver go after verifying that he was not at fault.

“We have suspended the constable and marked an inquiry against him. We will never tolerate corruption,” Doon said.
