Organised by ArriveSAFE, an NGO on behalf of the Ministry of Surface Transport and Highways, this happens to be the second event in the series on traffic awareness. The residents of the city also voiced their suggestions in response to the discussion initiated after the event.
Maninder Singh, a cycle enthusiast, brought up an interesting query. “How can cycles and rickshaw tracks be used after sunset as there is no provision of lighting,” he asked.
Col Gurdev Singh (Retd) added, “There are hardly any pedestrian paths and in places which have one, they are generally used as parking space.”
Sonika Kalra, another city resident, said, “How can we aspire to make the city green? Walking down to the market is no longer safe, so we have to use our vehicles.”
Yet another city resident and a victim of a road accident, Navneet Singh, suggests, “People speeding or caught driving while drunk should not only be fined heavily but be made to spend a couple of hours with the road accident victims and their families. This will force them to understand the pain and agony that one goes through because of their irresponsible behaviour.” The campaign is being supported by Registration and Licensing Authority, Chandigarh Transport Undertaking along with the Chandigarh Traffic Police.
