Chandigarh Driving without helmets would soon not be allowed on the Panjab University campus. Also, students have been asked not to exceed a speed limit of 25 km/hr in the campus.

Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Professor R C Sobti while addressing students during the Lohri celebrations at Students’ Centre on Tuesday said that riding vehicles without helmets, triple riding and speeding would be completely banned on campus soon. No action, as of now, is being taken against the traffic norm violators but the scene might change soon.

Lohri celebrations organised by the Students’ Council saw equal participation from the students as well as the faculty who danced to the beats of Punjabi songs around a bonfire. Speaking during the celebrations, Professor Sobti said, “I appeal to the students to follow the traffic rules inside the campus. Also, students should take the responsibility for keeping the campus neat and clean.”

During the festivities, Professor Sobti also showed a few dance moves while the students cheered him on. The bonfire was lit by Professor Sobti who was accompanied by Dean Students Welfare (DSW) Professor Naval Kishore, DSW (Women) Nistha Jaswal and PUTA Secretary Ashwani Koul.

Talking to Newsline, Students’ Council president Sahil Nanda said, “We will be organising more such functions on the campus. There are very few occasions where students get an opportunity to come together and celebrate, so we do not wish to miss out on any chance.”
