Kolkata Nearly 200 autorickshaw drivers staged a demonstration outside the Sealdah station on Monday after a senior IPS officer allegedly slapped one of the drivers for violating traffic rules. The drivers blocked roads and gheraoed the senior IPS officer for more than 45 minutes.

The incident occurred around 11.15 am when police caught two autos crossing a red signal near the Sealdah police station. K Hari Rajan, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) who was present on the spot, intervened and allegedly slapped an auto driver. “Instead of imposing a fine on us, the officer started beating us,” alleged Ajay Sau, one of the agitating auto drivers.

Local CITU leader Sanjay Sarkar supported claims that the IPS officer had indeed assaulted the driver.

Rajan, however, maintained: “I found several autos jumping signals and entering Sealdah station premises. We started initiating cases and imposing fines. They, however, started agitating while demanding that they be allowed to carry a fifth passenger on the right side of the auto.” Rajan added: “It was in a bid to disperse the mob that I had to grab one of the auto drivers by his collar. However, I did not beat anyone,” added Hari.
