Ludhiana, February 5 The NSS team of Khalsa College for Women visited Children’s Traffic Park today. Nearly 70 NSS volunteers were made aware about road safety rules. Sukhdev Singh, head constable, highlighted various reasons of traffic jams and accidents in Ludhiana.

He emphasised upon the ratio of traffic police officers against the number of vehicles in Ludhiana, which is very alarming. He pointed out that in Mumbai, these are 45 officers against 10,000 registered vehicles; in Kolkata 37 officers and 35 officers in Chennai, whereas there are only six officers against 10,000 registered vehicles in Ludhiana.

Sukhdev Singh added that the ratio of density of population and roads is also very low in Ludhiana, which is also one of the primary reasons of accidents. In the year 2007, 1,869 persons died in road accidents in Punjab, out of which nearly 300 died in Ludhiana district.

Students were also taught about various safe driving rules, rules for pedestrians, cyclists, various traffic signals, importance of Zebra crossing and different types of roads. Information was given about mandatory, cautionary and various informative signs.
