Gandhinagar, February 27 It was a rather flippant remembrance of the sixth anniversary of the Godhra train carnage by the Gujarat legislators. The proceedings only saw BJP members thumping their benches as Asarwa MLA Pradeepsinh Jadeja sought to pay homage to the victims of the incident that left 59 Kar Sevaks dead and led to the anti-Muslim riots killing over 1,000 people in February-March 2002.

The occasion was the second day of debate on the motion of thanks to Governor Nawal Kishore Sharma for his address to the House. Jadeja was speaking in favour of the motion that was moved by Gadhada MLA Atmaram Parmar, on Tuesday.

As he mentioned, Wednesday marked the completion of six years of an episode of “the conspiracy that killed Kar Sevaks at the Godhra Railway Station while they were returning from a pilgrimage to Ayodhya on February 27, 2002”. The treasury benches thumped their desks to the astonishment of the Opposition Congress and the viewers’ galleries.

Speaking after Jadeja, Congress’ Porbandar legislator and former leader of opposition Arjun Modhwadia expressed his dismay at the insincere attitude of the BJP. “Paying homage to the dead is a serious matter that warrants silence, not table thumping. Was it done because your party reaped political benefits out of that incident?” Modhwadia attacked, as this time the Congress benches thumped their tables even as the BJP MLAs shouted him down.

Speaker Ashok Bhatt intervened to ask both sides not to digress from the issue under discussion and the Assembly then moved on without paying homage to either the victims of the Godhra train carnage, or those dead in the riots after the incident.
