A team comprising Joint Director Keshav Kumar and SP (Special Crime Branch), CBI Kolkata, Arun Bothra met Director General of Police Bhupinder Singh at the state secretariat on Thursday. Sources in the CBI, however, said that the Central agency would begin its probe afresh.
“We will consider all the evidences collected by the West Bengal Police and look into their findings, but our investigation will be independent. According to the state police, the Maoists are behind the incident. But we will start our investigation from scratch,” said a senior CBI official from Delhi. The CBI team also met Chief Secretary Ardhendu Sen and Home Secretary Samar Ghosh.
According to the DGP, the CID handed over the case records, seizure lists and case diary to the CBI. Four persons arrested by the CID in connection with the incident would also be handed over to the CBI following court formalities. “We made a lot of progress in the investigation and had hoped to give the chargesheet within 90 days, but we had to hand over the case to the CBI.”
“The CBI has asked for assistance. Every kind of assistance in terms of forces, intelligence and logistic will be provided to them,” he added.
The state government, which had held the Maoists responsible for the mishap, had initially ruled out a CBI inquiry as demanded by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee. The Centre announced a CBI inquiry on June 2, the day Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress won a landslide victory in the municipal elections in West Bengal.
Meanwhile, CBI submitted its case documents to a court in Jhargram.
In the document, the agency has referred to the same charges as mentioned by the Government Railway Police when it has registered the case in connection with the Jnanewsari case. No section of murder and attempt to murder has been mentioned. The CBI, which was not presented by any lawyer but by a clerk of the Special Crime Branch, also did not sought the custody of the persons arrested by the CID. “We have started the investigation. We will be taking the custody of those arrested and examine the engine of the goods train and derailed coaches,” said a CBI official.
The CBI team will go to Kharagpur in a couple of days and will be camping in Kharagpur for a week.
Not appropriate to dispose of bodies before DNA test
Kolkata: Legal experts have told the state government that it would be inappropriate to dispose of the 47 decomposed bodies of Jnaneswari derailment. “The legal opinion is in favour of preserving the bodies till the results of DNA tests are made available. There are nearly 50 claimants of the 47 bodies and before settling the dispute, the bodies cannot be disposed of,” said Home Secretary Samar Ghosh. “But preserving them is a major problem. Let us see what we can do,” he added. The bodies are currently kept at the morgues of Calcutta Medical College, NRS Medical College and SSKM Medical College and Hospital.

CBI was all alone being involved with criminalization. This organisation has proved to be a stooge of corrupt politicians and bureaucrats. They will hushup every thing in favour of Maoist & Trinamool Congress. They played nasty role during Bhopal tragidy and was exposed fully. The then CBI director Rao proves himself to be a Chaprasi of Congress party nothing else.Headline TV has exposed these people.
I personally believe that CBI will dilute the Ganeswari train accident and save Railway Minister's failure. Security lapses of the Railway was openly visible. Also Trinamool Congress is helping Maoist all through to create chaos in West Bengal.PM knows well. Why other political parties did not expose the CBI for not exposing the real culprits.
