Lucknow, January 2 December 27: A Russian tourist was shot dead and three were hurt when armed dacoits robbed an AC coach of the Kamayani Express.

December 30: A passenger was critically injured after he was looted and thrown off the Lucknow-Sultanpur train

These are not isolated cases of train loots. Lack of manpower and security infrastructure has ensured that passenger trains become soft target for miscreants.

“We have now proposed that guards be issued handsets or mobile phones for easy communication with passengers. This number will be displayed in every compartment,” said Additional Director General S N Chak, UP GRP.

Assistant Security Commissioner, Railway Protection Force (Lucknow Division) R K Singh said that security needs to be upgraded. “Though the RPF’s responsibilities have been increased, the manpower is same. We deploy 4 to 7 guards on a train. But even that is not sufficient to keep track of the situation inside a train,” he said.
