Ahmedabad Work on ambitious projects of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is likely to be affected with the transfer of D Thara, who was the director of JNNURM projects, from the civic body as well as the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA).

Thara has been transferred to the Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation (GAIC) apparently due to poll related administrative exigencies. But the AMC has to cool its heels until the state sends some replacement in the near future.

Thara was bound to move out from an active posting as she had completed a quarter to five years in the district. Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner I P Gautam said that while work on the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) is almost streamlined and all that is left to accomplish is implementation and execution, procedural interaction with New Delhi in matters concerning Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) will certainly suffer with her exit.

With Gautam’s deputies already loaded with additional charge, there is hardly anyone to succeed Thara. According to Gautam, all that the AMC could do for now was wait for the next orders from the government.

“At present, there will be no replacement for Thara from within the AMC, as we are not considering any names. But there will be some impact on two major departments of BRTS and JNNURM”, Gautam said, adding that the situation is being assessed closely and something will be worked out.

Ironically, while Thara has been transferred to the GAIC, the shortage of deputy commissioners has become more acute. The process of selecting candidates for the post of deputy commissioner has suffered because it was Thara who was in charge of the selection process.

On her part, Thara said that her stint at the AMC was a great learning experience and gave her a chance to get familiar with a new work environment of civic administration.
