Punjab Transport Minister Master Mohan Lal presented the job letters to the beneficiaries at a special function held at the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) headquarters in Phase VIII. Speaking on the occasion, the minister said: “In the next two years, 1,000 buses will be added to take the fleet of Punjab Roadways to 2,500 and the Pepsu Road Transport to 1,500.”
Lal said that efforts are being made to make Punjab Roadways a profit-earning body in the next two years.
The minister also announced that a driving school will soon be opened at every district headquarter in the state, where trained drivers will groom budding drivers in addition to training the already working drivers of Punjab Roadways through refresher courses.
Also, for the first time, 72 employees of the Transport department were honoured for their “distinguished service”.
“The idea behind the move is to motivate other employees to perform better,” said Principal Secretary to the Department of Transport D S Jaspal, while stressing on the need for restoration of CNG supply to check the increasing pollution.
Director, Transport, Mandeep Singh said as many as 674 persons have already been given jobs on compassionate grounds in the Punjab Transport department.
