Jalandhar The All-India Motor Transport Congress today announced its decision to observe an indefinite, nationwide strike from January 5 onwards.

Addressing mediapersons here, president of the association Charan Singh Lohara said that despite repeated memorandums to the government, no concrete action had been taken regarding their demands.

He added that members had also met the Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, but to no avail. The major demands of the transporters are lower diesel prices and reduction in the permit fee.

Lohara said while petrol and diesel prices have come down internationally, the Union government has made only a nominal reduction in the price of fuel. The association has demanded that the price of diesel and petrol be lowered by Rs 10 and Rs 15 respectively.

Lohara said the Centre is promoting the railways at the cost of the road transport industry.

Bhupinder Singh Pandher, president of Punjab State Goods Transport Association, was also present on the occasion, along with other executive members.
