New delhi The owners of a travel agency who defaulted on a ticket payment to Air India worth Rs 7 crore were granted bail by the High Court on Monday. This was the fifteenth attempt by the accused to procure bail after they were arrested in October this year following a complaint filed by the airline in 2007.

The accused, Sanjeev Khanna (44) and his wife Jyotika (35), worked with Rao Tours and Travels in Munirka till early 2007. They later bought the company. Jyotika’s parents, Satish Kumar (62) and Swatantra Devi (60), who reportedly invested money in the company, were made joint

directors.

In April 2007, Khanna bought Air India tickets worth Rs 7 crore and defaulted on the fortnightly payment. “He wanted to become a big travel agent overnight, for which he had also raised a lot of money from the market. He used to buy tickets at high prices and sell them at very low rates to become popular,” a senior police officer said.

“Air India lodged a complaint against Rao Tours and Travels and its directors in May 2007,

after the company defaulted on payments. He was absconding since then but was finally arrested in October from Vasant Kunj,” a senior police officer said.

Khanna had fled with his wife and in-laws to evade arrest. His house in Vasant Kunj was also locked. The police said he had been shuttling between Delhi and Chandigarh.

His in-laws were traced to Chandigarh. His wife is, however, still absconding. She, too has been granted anticipatory bail, police officers said.

Khanna and his in-laws were booked under various sections of the IPC, including cheating and criminal breach of trust, at the Lodhi Colony police station.

Officers said that any recovery has not been made from the company yet.
