Chandigarh A Mathura-based excavation machine operator found three to four gold bars, weighing 5 kg each, from an ancient site and is now in Rajasthan. He wants to sell the gold bars at half the market price. Are you interested?

If the story convinces you and your answer is yes, then you are a potential victim of a gang of fraudsters, allegedly out to lure people into buying their ‘gold bars’.

“I am in dire need of money and, therefore, want to dispose of the gold at half the market price. I can’t sell it in Rajasthan due to the fear of getting caught,” a fraudster reportedly told a person over a phone call from Rajasthan.

Officials with the cyber cell are, meanwhile, tracking the phone calls to nab the culprits.

“They ask you to come to Rajasthan for the delivery. When the person reaches there, they rob him off the entire amount and threaten him with consequences,” said officials with the cell.

Confirming the news, a police officer said a number of people in the city, particularly women, have received such phone calls allegedly from the same gang.

“We have received complaints against the gang from many people and are looking into it. Since no one has been duped by the gangsters, there has been no official complaint lodged as yet,” said DSP (crime) KIP Singh.

Some people from other states have reportedly fallen victims to the gang. Senior Superintendent of Police S S Srivastava said: “We are gathering cases and information of the victims already duped by the gang. We request people to help the police arrest the gangsters.”

The SSP added, “We are trying to trace the phone calls of the frauds. Once identified, the Chandigarh Police will take help of the Rajasthan Police to arrest them.”
