Trees to be trimmed for Buddha’s convoy route, but who will do the job?

Kolkata Confusion over the jurisdiction of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and the Public Works department (PWD) has put the Special Branch (SB) of the Kolkata Police in a fix.

In the recent past, it has shot off several letters to both the KMC and the PWD to ensure that the convoy route of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee — from his Palm Avenue residence to the Writers’ Buildings and the Alimuddin Street party office — is secured by removing obstructions along the route.

The problem: the SB is unsure which area comes under which body. Therefore, its letters keep on shunting from one office to another, resulting in a huge delay in executing the work.

Though nearly a month has passed after they received the letters from the SB, the KMC and the PWD are yet to take any action. The letters talk of trimming trees, removing vats and licensed tyre shops and garages in several areas along the chief minister’s convoy route.

“We have received some letters asking us to trim the trees near Dalhousie Square. But the area is under the jurisdiction of the PWD. So, we have sent the letter to the department. Yet again we received a letter to trim trees along the East Canal Road, which comes under the Irrigation department. We again sent the letter back. Though we have received several letters, we cannot take any step,” said a senior KMC official on the condition of anonymity.

The Special Branch, however, did not seem bothered over the confusion. “We are sending letters to all the concerned departments. It’s a process. Confusion may prevail but it is taken care of immediately,” said an SB officer.

The SB has asked for trimming trees along the AJC Bose Road and the approach roads towards AJC Bose flyover, Canal East Road and Dalhousie Square. “We have already trimmed around 15 trees along the AJC Bose Road stretch. Work is on,” said a KMC official.

The civic body, however, claims to be facing technical problems in removing the obstructions. “We have been asked to remove a vat, placed near the Nonadanga tram depot. We removed it despite several complaints from locals,” said Arun Sarkar, chief engineer of KMC’s solid waste management department. “We have also been asked to remove the tyre shops and garages along the stretch from Park Circus to AJC Bose Road and in the Nonadanga area. All the shops have proper trade licences and they can’t be removed. We do not even have any place to relocate them. We have communicated these problems to SB but we are yet to receive any reply,” he added.

The SB seems though do not seem satisfied with the progress of the work. “We have shot off several letters to the nodal agencies demanding immediate action, as it concers the chief minister’s security. They are working rather slowly,” said Parthosarathi Ghosh, Deputy Commissioner of SB.
