According to senior PWD officials, the department has planned to reduce the size of the parking space by 100 cars to save the trees in question. They added that the problem of clearance was sorted out last week, after the new plans made sure there was parking space created on the ground level.
“We have re-designed the parking lot and made more space for parking on the ground level as well. It is sorted now,” said PWD engineer-in-chief A K Sinha, who added that the plan was cleared following a meeting last Thursday.
While the department needed permission to fell about 29 trees in all for the Rs 100-crore renovation project, the DUAC had objected to the design of the basement parking that requires the felling of 14 trees.
The MCD had also withheld its clearance earlier as the parking lot did not have adequate space as per stipulated guidelines, which says there has to be parking space for two cars for every 100 square metre of covered area. The total covered area of the stadium is 45,972 square metre, which means the PWD needed to make provisions for parking at least 460 cars.
