Thirty year in the industry and you’re still churning out hit films. What’s your secret?
I’ve been fortunate since the time I started as a hero. I got to work with good directors and that made a difference. And I was committed to my work.

Are you comfortable playing hero to young heroines?
It isn’t an issue if you are presentable. I’m physically fit and constantly trying to better myself as an actor. Plus, the audience is ready to accept actors over 40. Sean Connery acted till he was 70. Of course, I’m careful while choosing scripts. I have to make sure that I don’t end up looking like a fool.

Are you planning to take realistic films like Black & White more seriously?
There is no such plan. I also have mainstream films like Race, Tashan and Yuvraj releasing in the next few months. The script has to excite me, the genre does not matter.

Is there any chance of Black & White, Race and Tashan eating into the other’s territory, since they release at such short intervals?
It won’t make a difference since all these films are made by big banners. Besides, my last film, Welcome, was a blockbuster, so there is a positive vibe in the trade circuit.

One would have expected you to produce a mainstream entertainer, rather than Gandhi My Father, as your debut venture.
I plan to produce all kinds of films as long as the project is interesting. Short Cut, the next from my production house, is a thorough entertainer with Akshaye Khanna, Arshad Warsi and Amrita Rao.

Besides, I plan to make more movies with Feroz Abbas Khan.

Any plans with Madhuri Dixit now that she has made a comeback.
We’re working on an interesting script that might have the two of us together after a long time. It’s being written and will be from my production house. I have spoken to Madhuri on this. It will work out if she likes the script.

It seems you make all the decisions for your daughter Sonam.

That was before Saawariya released. Now she decides and I just listen. She’s lucky to have worked with Sanjay Leela Bhansali in her first film and Rakeysh Mehra in her second, Dilli 6.

Do your other children (daughter Rhea and son Harshawardhana) plan to act?
I think so. They are inclined to films and have a knack for acting.
