New Delhi The Lok Sabha witnessed an uproar on Thursday over the accident involving Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee’s convoy and a lorry while she was returning from Lalgarh.

The Trinamool Congress members alleged a conspiracy to eliminate their leader and demanded a probe into the accident. Rejecting Trinamool’s claim of a conspiracy, the CPM said it was ready for a probe by any agency into the incident.

Speaking at the Zero Hour, Trinamool MP Sudip Bandopadhyay said: “There have been attempts earlier also to kill her. She can be eliminated bodily from politics.” He asked how a lorry could enter the convoy of Banerjee, who has Z-plus security, and hit a car carrying police officials. “Her car was also hit,” he added.

Maintaining that Banerjee was injured in the incident, he demanded an investigation to ascertain how the security of the convoy was breached.

CPM leader Basudeb Acharia told the House that the driver of the truck was arrested and a CID inquiry has been ordered by the state government. “Why are they misleading the House? Why are they being allowed to mislead the House? They are raising the issue unnecessarily,” Acharia said.

But Trinamool members continued to shout him down, leading to protests from their Left counterparts. Trying to cool down tempers, RJD chief Lalu Prasad said, “The House sends its good wishes to Banerjee and wishes that she should return to the House soon. As soon as she returns here, peace will return to the House.”

Speaking to the mediapersons outside the Parliament, CPM leader Sitaram Yechuri said that his party was ready for any probe. “Yes, we also want an inquiry. Let there be a probe. We do not have any problems as to who conducts the enquiry — CBI or any other agencies,” said Yechuri. “We have heard this so often. If her health is in jeopardy, we wish her well. But don’t use it as a political excuse. She uses such excuses to get out of tight situations,” he added.

Trinamool plans protest, writes to PM

The Trinamool Congress will stage a sit-in demonstration at Esplanade on Friday to protest against the “unabated” political violence in various parts of the state and the alleged CPM conspiracy to eliminate Railway minister Mamata Banerjee. “We have written to the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister as we believe that the Left Front government is incapable of tackling the situation,” the party said.

Truck driver remanded in jail custody

Tamluk: A local court remanded the driver of the truck, which had hit a car of Mamata Banerjee’s convoy, in 12 day’s judicial custody. Gujjar Singh has been charged with attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy. Singh was earlier arrested on the charge of rash and dangerous driving. He was then released on bail. Later, the police arrested him again after MP Suvendu Adhikari lodged a complaint that there was an attempt on the life of the Trinamool Congress chief.
