The area catapulted Trinamool to the centre of Bengal politics. But after the party captured the local panchayat, severe infighting has thwarted developmental activities, with a section of Panchayat Samity leaders being allegedly involved in corruption.
Caught in the crossfire, its Block Development Officer Anirban Chatterjee has gone on leave for the past one week.
A section of leaders allegedly put pressure on the BDO for release of funds for NREGA and other projects. Some of them even visited Chatterjee in his office and verbally abused him for not giving in to their demands.
Chatterjee did not file any official complaint, but last Friday, he went homeon leave.
“All I know is that the BDO has taken leave, he said someone in his family is sick,” said Archana, District Magistrate of East Midnapur.
Finally after the intervention of Suvendu Adhikary, MP and Trinamool pointsman in East Midnapore, some of the panchayat samity members apologised to Chatterjee, who is yet to join duty.
“It was a minor misunderstanding,” Adhikary said. “There was some problem with some of our Panchayat Samity leaders and the BDO regarding the release of funds. The BDO went on leave. Now the matter has been resolved. The BDO is a cooperative young man.”
A war of words, meanwhile, has begun between the two factions of Trinamool. One group has written to Adhikary, informing him about malpractices perpetrated in Nandigram by the Panchayat Samity — including misappropriation of development funds and nepotism.
“The usurpation of development funds is hampering works like that of the NREGA,” said a Gram Panchayat Sabhapati.
“The BDO is a good man who protested against this... We have fought in Nandigram against CPM’s atrocities. But now such activities are tarnishing the image of the party and Mamata Banerjee.”

TMC started Nandigram movement for electoral gains only, it was not based on any political ideology. TMC carries all the bad qualities of Left and they have additional darkness built in their narrow actions. All the propaganda during last 2-3 years are false and has created reverse development moves. People need to look at Mamata's lack of sincerity for development of Bengal. The energy created by Left could raise Bengal to the top, starting at Nandigram, Singur and several other places where LF was trying to establish industries. TMC will be exposed sooner or later, hopefully before long.
