According to police, more than 100 people including CPM activists and hired goons equipped with firearms attacked Chandipur village about 5 am on Tuesday. According to Birbhum SP, Humanun Kabir, one TMC supporter, Ballav Sekh (36), was killed and four other persons were injured in the attack.
Two persons along with firearms have been arrested during the police raid in the area, said Kabir. The police have continued the combing operations in Chandipur and its adjoining villages to trace the attackers, he said.
According to a source in Birbhum police, Chandipur village is currently dominated by TMC. A few months ago, a section of villagers belonging to CPM camp who wanted to come back were not allowed to enter in the village by police as they were wanted in some criminal cases.
On Tuesday morning, the homeless CPM activists, along with hired goons from Mangalkot in Burdwan, organised the attack, said the source. The clash continued for more than hour. The villages in Nanur police station have become a hotbed of violence due to political rivalry between the CPM and TMC in the last few years. Both the parties have piled large stocks of firearms and crude bombs in the area. Recently, the Birbhum police had conducted raids in the area to seize the arms.
Kabir said about 2,000 crude bombs and 19 firearms were recovered from various villages in Nanur police station in the last two months. The raids would continue, he said.
