After registering a landslide victory in the elections — the party bagged 95 of the 141 wards — Trinamool Congress is likely to fill the Members-Mayor-in Council (MMiCs) with party veterans and only a few new faces. The decision about the portfolio will be announced on Wednesday. “Discussions are on regarding who all will become MMiCs,” said senior Trinamool leader Partho Chatterjee.
The names doing the rounds are Firhad (Bobby) Hakim, Rajib Deb, Atin Ghosh who are expected to get significant portfolios like buildings, roads and water in the Shovon Chatterjee’s mayoral council.
Others like Samsuzzaman Ansari, Amitava Banerjee and Susanta Ghosh are also expected to get important portfolios. Sashi Panja is expected to get health.
However, sources in the party don’t rule out last minute change in the portfolios. “It will be trusted leaders — people who are close to Kalighat and for years have been with Mamata Banerjee,” said a senior Trinamool leader. “Apart from that, the doctors and advocates who have have been elected councillors will also get minor departments. Care will be taken that north and south Kolkata are represented adequately,” the leader added.
Rupa Bagchi will lead Left at KMC
The Left Front, which won 35 wards in the KMC polls, on Tuesday chose Rupa Bagchi, as Leader of Opposition in the civic body. But the party decided not to field its candidate for the election to the post of mayor on Wednesday. “We have decided not to contest for the mayoral post,” said CPM leader Robin Deb. This has cleared the decks for the election of Shovan Chatterjee as the next Mayor of the city. Another Trinamool candidate, Sachchidananda Banerjee, is set to take oath as chairman of KMC in the absence of any candidate from the Left Front.
