Kolkata Clashes between students owing allegiance to Trinamool and the Students Federation of India (SFI) were reported at the Behala College in South 24 Parganas following a sit-in-demonstration by a section of teachers against the college authorities on Monday.

Four teachers were recently removed from the governing body of the college, whose fresh elections were held on Monday. The teachers alleged that they were removed after they pointed out financial irregularities in the admission procedure.

College principal Swapan Kumar Sur refuted the allegations. The inspector of colleges of the Calcutta University had asked the college to hold fresh elections of teachers’ representatives in the GB because the last elections were not held as per norm, he said.

Teachers, however, boycotted the elections and staged a demonstration against the authorities. At the same time, some students owning allegiance to the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad started raising slogans in favour of the teachers. This led to altercation between them and SFI supporters, which later turned into a scuffle. SFI members said since the Parishad supporters were creating disturbances within the campus, they had to intervene.
