“We have submitted a detailed list of 93 armed camps of the CPM in various parts of the state to the DGP. Let us see what steps he takes,” Trinamool leader Partha Chatterjee told reporters today.
After taking over as DGP on August 31, Mukherjee had said that he would take action if he received specific complaints about existence of such camps as alleged by the Trinamool.
Chatterjee, the Leader of the Opposition, said the CPM had stockpiled arms at the camps located in West Midnapore, Bankura, Hooghly, Burdwan and Birbhum districts. Six new camps have come up at Lalgarh in the last 48 hours. The camps in West Midnapore district were located mostly near the camps of the joint forces operating in the area, he alleged.
Chatterjee also demanded removal of the police superintendents of Hooghly and Burdwan districts, claiming that the former, an accused in the Nandigram police firing, was helping the CPM procure arms in Hooghly. There were a number of complaints against the Burdwan SP as well, he added.
Stating that the CPM-led Left Front government in the state was losing the people’s mandate, he said: “We have told the DGP he should work impartially in providing security to the people when the CPM is indulging in bloodshed.”
The delegation which met the DGP today also included Union Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy and three former IPS officers H A Sawfi, Abani Joardar and Rachpal Singh.
Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Surajit Kar Purakayastha was also present at the meeting.
The DGP, however, declined to comment on the meeting. But immediately after meeting the Trinamool delegation, the DGP and the IGP held a meeting with Home Secretary Samar Ghosh for about 40 minutes.
Ghosh later said: “The DGP’s meeting with Trinamool leaders was not discussed. I will know from the DGP later what transpired at the meeting.”
