Trinamool’s windfall: Teachers see straw in wind

Kolkata In the aftermath of 2009 general elections, when the Trinamool Congress recorded an emphatic win, more teachers at school and college levels are joining organisations backed by the party.

The education cell of the Trinamool Congress now boasts of 20,000 teachers.

“Earlier we neither had our own teachers’ unions nor supporters in the teaching community. The organisations of the Congress and SUCI were mainly the voice of the Opposition. In early 2000, we started to get our own members and now we have at least 20,000 to 25,000 teachers with us,” said Shobhan Deb Chattopadhyay, Trinamool MLA.

Unlike the ruling CPM, which has strong unions in primary and secondary level schools, as well as in colleges and universities, the Trinamool-aligned teachers work under the banner of the party’s education cell. The party, however, plans to soon form different unions for each of the levels.

“We have plans to set up our own organisations at primary and secondary school levels, as well as college and university levels. We have got the various groups registered, but at present the Trinamool Congress Siksha Cell is the nodal organisation,” said Chitta Ranjan Mandal, president of Trinamool’s education cell.

Mandal, a professor of physics at Jadavpur University, said that in future the general council of the education cell will frame educational policies of the Trinamool Congress.

According to the members of the cell, they are trying to induct at least a few thousand active members in each district.

With the rise in the membership number in its education cell, the party, meanwhile, laid down policies and programmes that will be undertaken by the cell.

The cell is planning to launch agitations on the issue of elections of district primary council chairman. It also plans to protest the unit tests and the grading system at the secondary level.

“Since last one month, we are protesting in East Midnapore against the election of the district primary school chairman. Moreover, the unitary tests being conducted in the schools are reducing the number of teaching days,” said Dibyendu Mukherjee, general secretary of the Trinamool’s education cell.

With the government planning to introduce no detention policy till Class VIII, we are taking a note of it and planning for larger agitation on this, Mukherjee added. In universities too — like University of Calcutta and Jadavpur

University — some of the faculty members are aligning with the Trinamool.
