Patiala A truck, which reportedly ferried cows from Punjab, was set on fire by a few unidentified people in Patiala, police said on Sunday.

Eyewitnesses said the truck carrying a number of cows was stopped by members of the local gaushala and Bajrang Dal early on Sunday morning. They were protesting the ferrying of cows in the truck, alleging that the animals were being taken for slaughter, which is banned in the country.

The truck was later brought near a temple on the Mall Road and the cows were unloaded. The eyewitnesses said the cows were in a bad condition and were offered water and food by the locals. They said the truck had been specially designed to ferry cows.

As the truck was parked near the temple, someone set fire to it, said the eyewitnesses. By the time fire tenders reached the place, the truck had suffered enough damage. No arrest has been made so far.
