Kolkata The state government has ordered an inquiry into an accident that the convoy of Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee met with at Kolaghat, East Midnapore district, on Monday while she was on her way back from the Lalgarh rally. As the convoy stopped near a sweetmeat shop where her partymen started buying sweets and snacks, a truck came from the rear and rammed a car carrying state police Intelligence Branch personnel.

The vehicle, under the impact of the truck, rammed against Banerjee’s car which was positioned next to it.

The driver of the IB car received head injuries and was admitted to a hospital.

On Tuesday Banerjee fell sick and was advised two days’ rest by doctors. “Prima facie it was an accident. However, I have sought a report from the SP on the issue,” Home Secretary Samar Ghosh said on Tuesday.

Trinamool Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha Sudip Bandyopadhhay raised a furore in the House, alleging a conspiracy to kill the railway minister. In Kolkata, the Trinamool Congress did not allege any foul play but termed the incident a ‘severe security lapse’. “It could have been an accident. But how can a truck get into the convoy of a person who enjoys Z-plus security?” asked Union Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy.

Meanwhile, East Midnapore SP Ashoke Biswas said that the truck driver had been interrogated and, after a breathalyser test, was found to be ‘sobre’ while driving. He added that the driver Gurjan Singh, who hailed from Sapura, Punjab, came to East Midnapore to collect chemical granules. Singh was not fluent in Hindi as he came from rural Punjab, said Biswas. It was his second visit to West Bengal driving a truck.

According to Biswas, Singh failed to control the truck and it rammed behind the security vehicle of the convoy. He had tried to stop by changing gear to neutral after he lost control, said Singh during interrogation.

The police seized the truck and sent it for a mechanical test, said Biswas.
