Amarvir Singh, president of the Wholesale Fruits and Vegetable Market Association, said: “Supplies have not been affected. In fact, we have excess stock as most vegetables come from the nearby areas. We did not receive a fresh supply of bananas today but we have enough in reserve. The prices of vegetables like onion, tomato, cauliflower and carrot have not increased at all. So if a retailer is charging more money, the consumer should cross-question him.”

While onions sold at Rs 16 a kg in the wholesale market today, tomatoes were priced at Rs 7 a kg and potatoes were pegged at Rs 2. Ladies finger sold in the range of Rs 18 to 22 while cauliflower was Rs 5 a kg.

President of the All India Motor Transport Congress arrested under ESMA
President of the All India Motor Transport Congress, Charan Singh Lohara, was arrested under the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) in New Delhi on Friday in connection with the ongoing truckers’ strike. Members of the association have called an urgent meeting on Saturday morning to discuss the future course of action.

Also, the transport association started a chain hungerstrike on Friday. “This will continue for the coming days,” said Janak Raj Goyal, general secretary of the Ludhiana Transporters’ Association.
