Ahmedabad As the truck operators’ strike entered the third day on Wednesday, the state government decided to adopt a wait-and-watch policy for another couple of days before resorting to any harsh measures.

The state Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Narottam Patel, said the government would not intervene as long as things did not cause suffering for the people.

A control room has been set up. People can dial 079-23251366 in case they face any problem due to the strike.

State Civil Supplies Secretary Rajesh Kishore said he did not expect any trouble, as the striking truckers had assured that supplies of essential commodities would not be hampered.

Port and Transport Secretary S J Haider, meanwhile, chaired a meeting attended by his department officials to review the situation.

An action plan has been kept on standby for implementation by district magistrates, superintendents of police and road transport authorities, who have been asked to see that nobody faced any trouble.

K M Patel, a deputy director, has been made the nodal officer to handle the situation, an official release said.

Mukund Parmar, the chief organiser of the Manav Adhikar Samiti of GPCC, said the government should see that the strike does not take a violent turn.

“Over 150 people were seen blocking the highway near Aslali on Tuesday. They were threatening to burn vehicles,” he said.

He said the agitation continued on Wednesday, but truckers should remember that their business depended on trading activity and therefore, taking businessmen to ransom in this manner would not serve any purpose. Parmar has asked the police to intervene in such cases.
