The arrested include five children and six women. All the accused had infiltrated into India a few years ago and moved to Mumbai in search of jobs.

After the recent terror attacks in Mumbai, they left the city and returned to Kolkata. At present, they are kept in the custody of Bongaon police.

The BSF officers, meanwhile, said the force is taking steps to curb human trafficking in the border districts of south Bengal. On the occasion of the BSF Day on Monday, Deputy Inspector General of South Bengal Frontier, Vikash Chandra said: “We are coordinating with NGOs to help the women trafficked to India return to their country, Bangladesh.”

Advance thermal sensors have been recently introduced at the border check posts. The sensors can locate infiltrators from distance and help the jawans patrolling at night, said the officer.

Considering the recent terror attacks in Mumbai, the personnel posted along the Bangladesh border are put on alert, said Chandra.

The force is also involved in various social activities. “Today is World AIDS Day. We organised an AIDS awareness programme for our men at Salt Lake on Sunday,” he added. To empower the wives of security personnel, the BSF Wives Welfare Association is planning to provide vocational training to them, he said.
