Pune, January 7 The literary work of Sant Tukaram, the 17th century saint-poet of the State, will now be available in the digital form. Noted computer scientist Vijay Bhatkar and his India International Multiversity are creating a website, www.etukaram.com. The idea is to showcase the life of Sant Tukaram and bring out the relevance of his thoughts in modern era.

The website will be inaugurated by President Pratibha Patil at Dehu on February 11, on the occasion of the 400th birth anniversary of Sant Tukaram. Along with Tukaram Gatha, the website will have around 4,500 abhangas of Sant Tukaram. Some of them will be in the audio format. There will be special articles written by eminent Tukaram scholars like Dr. Sadanad More, Dilip Chitre, and Dr. V.D. Karad. US-based researcher Ramesh Ganguly has written on how to render the text in the modern context. The site will also have visuals from the famous Marathi film, Sant Tukaram.

“It is an attempt to sensitise the younger generation about Sant Tukaram’s classical work which is still relevant,” says Dr. Bhatkar. “There is some information available on the internet, but this site will help researchers and commoners to understand Sant Tukaram completely. We are planning a similar project to digitise Dnyaneshwari and Dasbodh,” he said.

At present, a core team of six or seven persons is working on the project funded by Bank of Maharashtra. Deshbhakt Balasaheb Bharde Institute of Information Technology has provided the technical support. “In the first phase, the text will be available in English, Marathi and Hindi. But some material is available in German, French and Spanish also. We plan to add it in the second phase,” said a core team member and India International Multiversity vice chancellor Pramod Talgeri.
