Mumbai, April 8 The Cyber Crime Investigation Cell (CCIC) of the Mumbai Police on Sunday last arrested two teenagers for posting a fake sleazy profile of a 20-year-old college student on a social networking site on the web. The boys allegedly wanted to get back at her for coming in the way of her younger sister’s relationship with one of them.

According to the police, both the accused are 17 years old and belong to well-to-do business families in the city. The two are currently in a school. They were arrested following a complaint at the Malad police station on April 2.

“A college student complained that someone had created her fake profile at orkut.com. She said she had been receiving obscene calls from strangers. When she asked one of the callers why he had called her, she was told that her profile had been created on orkut.com in which her mobile number was mentioned. The profile was sleazy in nature and portrayed the complainant as though she was soliciting,” said Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime, Rakesh Maria.

“The Cyber Cell traced the IP (Internet Protocol) address from which the profile was created. This led us to a cyber café, from where the two teenagers operated. During questioning, it was revealed that one of them was seeing the complainant’s younger sister. They were classmates”.

According to the police, the complainant got to know of their meetings and she reported the matter to her sister’s school principal. She also asked her to keep away from the boy.

To get back at the complainant, the boy and along with his friend created the profile. “They waited for about six months after the incident, so that the complainant would not be able to guess who the culprits were,” said Maria.

According to the police, the two are in the 11th standard. Both had failed the 10th standard once. They were produced in a juvenile court and have been sent to the Dongri remand home.

“More and more teenagers and school students are being caught in such offences. We are trying to educate them about such crimes. We also show them case studies to warn them that, contrary to what they think, such mischief makers can be caught. We are also conducting meetings with parent-teacher associations,” said Maria.
