One of the alleged drug peddlers is a Ranip-based woman, Sharifa Sheikh, while the two alleged policmen involved in the racket are Gambhir Khunt and Vinod Paggi. Both the policemen are childhood friends and posted respectively in Naroda and Modassa police stations, ATS officers said.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of the ATS nabbed a resident of Danilimda, Yusuf Sheikh, with 630 grams of charas (hashish) late on Saturday. While being interrogated by the ATS, Yusuf broke down and revealed that he had got the contraband from constable Khunt.
“Khunt’s questioning revealed that he had smuggled the contraband from Modasa around December last year. He told us that Paggi was the kingpin of the racket and that the latter’s source of contraband is not known to him,” said ATS inspector S M Saiyed.
Saiyed added: “It seems Paggi was selling off some part of the contraband seized during police raids. It is a good quality charas. Involvement of more drug peddlers cannot be ruled out,” Saiyed added.
Sharifa, who is a resident of the Hagan Jig No Taro area in Ranip, is a drug peddler and used to sell brown sugar at her residence. The ATS had raided her residence earlier and arrested her along with the contraband.
