“Two people have died, but the toll may rise,” said Additional Commissioner of Police K Hariharan.
Gopal Bhattacharya, director, Fire services, added: “We have rescued six people and sent them to hospital.”
The incident took place during a mild thunderstorm. “I was sitting inside my paan shop when I saw the front portion of the building collapse. Three to four people fell on the road and were taken to hospital,” said Sunil Guchait, an eyewitness.
It was in February that the building had caught fire, following which the KMC had declared it as endangered. “The building is owned by Kolkata Port Trust and even though we declared it as endangered, the KOPT did not do anything,” said Debashis Dutta, Director General, building, KMC.
