Two die, three hurt in separate mishaps

Dera Bassi Two persons died and three sustained injuries in separate mishaps that took place in and around Dera Bassi in the last 24 hours. A retired PSEB employee and another person working in a factory at Dera Bassi died, while three persons, including a woman got severely injured, in five different road accidents.

Narinder Singh (68), a resident of Shalimar Enclave, Dhakoli, was run over by a tractor-trolley. The accident took place when the trolley driver was reversing the vehicle and could not see Narinder, who was standing on the roadside with his back towards the trolley.

The trolley driver has been arrested. Narinder Singh is survived by his wife and a son, who stays in Australia.

In another accident, Gurpreet Singh, a 22-year-old resident of Prem Nagar, Lalru, and an employee of the Agro Dutch factory on ITI Road in Lalru, died yesterday when a huge bundle of fodder fell on him in the factory.

The owner of the factory M S Bhindar said that Gurpreet suffocated to death. Police have initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The third incident took place on Barwala road in Dera Bassi, where Sunny, a 22-year-old resident of the area, was injured when a canter hit his motorbike. Sunny sustained serious injuries and was rushed to PGI, Chandigarh.

The canter driver tried to escape from the spot but was caught by people, who was later handed over to the police.

Another incident took place on the Mubarakpur-Bhankarpur road in Dera Bassi when a rashly-driven car hit a 65-year-old woman while she was crossing the road, leaving her severely injured.

The woman was identified as Chhidan Devi, a resident of Trivedi Camp village. She was rushed to Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, from where she was referred to GMCH-32, Chandigarh, owing to her critical condition. The car driver managed to flee from the spot. Police have registered a case against him.

In yet another incident, Vikram, a 24-year-old, sustained severe head injuries when his scooter collided with a cycle. The injured was first rushed to Dera Bassi Civil Hospital in an unconscious condition, and then referred to PGI, Chandigarh, where his condition is said to be critical.
