The NIA team led by an officer of DIG rank had been camping in the district for a couple of days. According to a senior officer, the NIA team — with the help of the district police — has picked up Manjer Singh, a senior leader of KYKL and his wife Meera Tamang, another active member of KYKL. Both were wanted in several cases in Manipur and Assam, the officer said.
According to sources, Singh was working on spreading the outfit’s base in North Bengal, after a senior leader of KYKL, Ningthoujam Tomba alias Koireng, was arrested by the district police from Matigara on March 14. Koireng was in charge of the finance wing of the outfit,
During Tomba’s interrogation, the police came to know how the KYKL had started establishing links with several international terrorists outfit in Nepal, Burma and Bhutan.
“After the interrogation report of Tomba was submitted, the NIA took up the case. The NIA team then reached here and asked for help to arrest these two terrorists. The case was taken over by the NIA due to its international ramification,” said Ranveer Kumar, Inspector General, North Bengal.
The NIA team was led by R P Meena, Deputy Inspector General of NIA.
According to sources, the NIA team may take the arrested persons to Delhi today. A senior officer said: “Singh was living in Kurseong for a few months. After he came to this place, he married Meena Tamang. Singh used to work in a private organisation in the area.”
