To turn things around, Kumar has ordered all station house officers to hire a computer operator to teach the police the basics of Internet.
Akhil Kumar, soon after joining, took note of the skills seniors in his department possess. He discovered only two police officets — a circle officer and a station house officer — knew how to send e-mails.
“I have asked the station house officers to install a personal computer with an Internet in every police station,” added Kumar. He has also told them to learn the computers from their friends in nearby cyber café .
To help police personnel reach out to people in the district, the SSP has also asked all cops —from the station house officer down to the constable — to carry visiting cards. “I saw none of the police officers have a visiting card with them. Visiting cards, to be printed at their own cost, will cost them barely Rs 100 but will be able to keep them in touch with people,” added Kumar. On Monday, Kumar will be available on three helpline numbers to between 12 pm and 2 pm. The numbers are 9999302401, 9910205640 and 9999993040. “Tomorrow will be my first interaction with the public. Anyone who thinks that his or her problem is not solved at the police station level could call me,” said the new SSP.
