Kolkata With the draught situation worsening in the Haldia dock, two ships recently touched the river bottom on two consecutive days.

On December 29, MV Vera with nearly 10,000 metric ton of iron ore fines touched the river bottom along track 3 on Upper Jellingham.

A day before another ship, MV Genco Muse, had run aground at upper Jellingham along the same track for around 10 minutes.

Sources at Haldia dock claimed that the deteriorating draught condition had led to the two incidents.

Rajeev Dubey, Deputy Chairman of Haldia dock, denied the report and said that no ship had run aground in the last two days.

“Nothing has happened and there are no draught problems. There are a lot of ships that are waiting for a berth at the sand heads but it is not due to any draught problem,” said Dubey.

“The bottom clearance for big vessels is 90 cm and for small vessels is 70 cm. Earlier, it used to be around 125 cm and 90 cm, respectively, but it was revised last year due to the draught problems. But the present situation at both the places is quite serious,” said a source at Haldia dock.
