Ahmedabad The Customs Department has initiated legal action against two foreign nationals under the provisions of the Indian Customs Act and the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 after they were caught smuggling 2.2 kg of ivory from the Ahmedabad airport early Sunday morning.

The Customs and Forest departments have started a joint investigation into the matter.

The two accused, who have been identified as Ibrahim Abdulla and Roshan, hold Syrian passports.

According to the case details , Ibrahim is the captain and Roshan is the crewmember of a ship, King, which had come to the ship breaking yard of Alang in Bhavnagar district for dismantling.

After leaving the ship, the two men had come to the Ahmedabad airport and were about to leave for Syria on an Air Arabia flight when the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officers caught them with the ivory.

Elephant is a protected animal and the selling of elephant ivory is banned in India. However, it is valued at 1,500-1,600 dollars per kilogram in the international market.

Pradeep Khanna, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), said: “After leaving the ship at Alang, the two men were to leave by air on Sunday morning. The ivory was, however, recovered at the airport. The Customs and Forest departments are investigating the matter.”
