The police said the two wanted to have some fun with the newly purchased cellphone and made a call that left shoppers and shop owners at the mall on tenterhooks. “Vishal Kataria (17) and Ajay Kanji (20) were brought to Rajkot from Anjar in Kutch district by a team of Malaviyanagar police on Monday. The duo allegedly made the call,” said the police.
They added that Kataria and Ajay saw the phone number of one of the shops at the mall located on 150-feet Ring Road in a newspaper advertisement. On January 5, Vishal called up that number and told that a bomb has been planted in the mall.
The police traced the number from the call records.
“It was a Reliance number and with the help of the service provider we found the location of the caller. We found the call was made by two youth and the main conspirator was a teenager,” said the police, adding, “Vishal’s father had recently got this cell number. The boys decided to play some pranks, which turned out to be a serious threat.” The police was in the process of framing charges against the duo.
Dipen Sodha, the manager of the Iscon, the biggest mall in Saurashtra, said, “The call was taken seriously. It came at 5.45 pm and we had to request the customers to vacate the complex for police inspection.”
“Though nothing objectionable was found and the call turned out to be a hoax, we could not reopen the mall on the day due to security reasons. Since it was a weekend, customers had come from all over Saurashtra,” said Sodha.
